Day 1 • Fly into Leh: ladakh winter trip

You land and the cold hits before you've crossed the tarmac. That's Leh in December, January, February — the air is thin and it's freezing and both of those things register in the same breath. Cold enough to matter. Leh daytime temperatures between December and February sit around minus 8 to minus 15 degrees Celsius. Nights drop further — minus 15 to minus 20 is common and it can go lower in January. The hotel rooms are heated and liveable. Outside is where the cold becomes real. Your phone battery drains within an hour. Exposed skin hurts after ten minutes in wind. The air is extremely dry and lips crack on the first day if you haven't packed heavy balm. None of this is meant to scare you off — thousands of people live here through every winter. But packing wrong or underestimating the cold turns an interesting trip into a miserable one. Layer properly. Bring a down jacket rated to minus 20 at minimum.

Leh city, the Indus valley corridor from Spituk to Hemis, Thiksey, Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Sangam, and the western road toward Likir and Alchi on cleared days. Khardung La is sometimes open for military convoy access but civilian tourist traffic is restricted and unreliable. Pangong via Chang La opens on some days in winter — Bon offers a separate frozen Pangong product for that route with weather-dependent scheduling. Nubra Valley is largely inaccessible in deep winter. Fog in Delhi or cloud cover over the passes can delay or cancel flights with short notice, especially in January. Most winter flights depart Delhi early morning and the window for landing at Leh narrows by midday.
