The water runs on both sides simultaneously, the mainland recedes in both directions at once and the island sits inside the current without going anywhere. Nongkhnum in the West Khasi Hills is one of the larger river islands in Meghalaya – wide enough to hold paddy fields, forest interior and walking paths that do not return to a road. October to April is the best time for sightseeing, trekking, and clear valley views.
