Day 1 • Arrival in Leh and Rest: ladakh monastery and lake circuit

The ladakh monastery and lake circuit begins at Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport where the Bon vehicle meets the group. Leh sits at 3,524 metres and the body registers it in the first breath - thinner air, sharper light, a dryness that city lungs have no preparation for. The hotel is fifteen minutes from the airport. The rest of the day is deliberate stillness. Water, warmth, no exertion. The circuit ahead covers two lakes above 4,300 metres and one pass above 5,300, and the body needs these first hours to begin the adjustment that makes the rest of the trip possible.

Day 2 • Hemis and Thiksey Monasteries: ladakh monastery and lake circuit

The monastery day. Hemis in the morning, the largest in Ladakh, home to the Drukpa Kagyu order, set back in a valley 45 kilometres from Leh where the silence is structural rather than incidental. Thiksey after, 12 storeys on a hilltop, the Gelugpa order structure housing a 15-metre seated Maitreya and butter lamps that have been burning since before the tourists arrived. The ladakh monastery and lake circuit places these two on Day 2 because they set the register for everything that follows - the scale of Hemis, the verticality of Thiksey, and the quiet that both share once the bus groups leave by afternoon.

Khardung La at approximately 5,359 metres, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, and the third monastery of this ladakh monastery and lake circuit waits on the other side. The descent into Nubra Valley at roughly 3,048 metres brings the Shyok river and sand dunes into view. Day 4 • Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso: ladakh monastery and lake circuit

The first lake. The Shyok route from Nubra to Pangong runs five to six hours alongside the river and avoids doubling back to Leh. BRO has improved the stretch with bridges and tarmac though gravel sections keep the surface honest. The ladakh monastery and lake circuit reaches Pangong Tso by afternoon at 4,350 metres, the lake arriving first as a colour through the final hill gap before the water itself becomes visible. The camp sits lakeside at Spangmik. The evening colour shift - mountains turning gold, lake going dark, cold arriving fast after sunset - is the first of two lake evenings on this trip.

Day 5 • Pangong Tso to Nyoma: ladakh monastery and lake circuit

The sunrise at Pangong in the early morning before the drive south. Grey-silver at five, turquoise by seven, the deep blue arriving by nine. The ladakh monastery and lake circuit leaves the first lake after breakfast and heads south toward Nyoma through Loma, approximately 100 kilometres in three to four hours across the Changthang plateau. The terrain opens into something close to emptiness - brown earth, distant peaks, the occasional Changpa nomad camp with Pashmina goats grazing nearby. Nyoma village on the Indus provides the overnight and the transition point between the two lakes.

Standard itineraries go to Nubra and return, then go to Pangong and return - repeating the same passes and the same roads twice. This ladakh monastery and lake circuit covers more ground in fewer driving hours because it moves forward rather than back.

Pangong is the lake everyone has seen - turquoise, photogenic, lined with camps, featured in films. Tso Moriri is what Pangong was before the attention arrived. Sitting at 4,522 metres, it is a designated Ramsar Wetland, home to bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes in season, surrounded by the Changpa nomadic settlement at Korzok. There are no rows of tents, no signboard photo spots, no crowd. The water is darker, the silence is deeper, and the experience is closer to what Ladakh was before it became a destination.

The Nyoma stop exists for two reasons. First, the direct drive from Pangong to Tso Moriri through Loma and Sumdo is roughly 190 kilometres on remote roads that can take eight to nine hours, and arriving at Tso Moriri exhausted defeats the purpose of visiting. Second, breaking the journey at Nyoma gives a comfortable overnight at a lower altitude before climbing to 4,522 metres at Tso Moriri. The stop is practical, not filler, and it keeps the driving days manageable.

Four. Hemis on Day 2 - the largest in Ladakh, Drukpa Kagyu order, known for the annual Cham masked dance festival. Thiksey on Day 2 - 12-storey Gelugpa hilltop monastery with a 15-metre seated Maitreya. Diskit on Day 3 - Nubra Valley's main gompa, over 350 years old, with the 32-metre Maitreya facing the border. Korzok on Day 6 - the monastery above Tso Moriri at one of the highest inhabited settlements in India. Each belongs to a different landscape and a different altitude, and the circuit connects them through the terrain rather than listing them.

June to September gives full access to all roads, passes and accommodation on the circuit. The Changthang plateau route to Tso Moriri is stable from mid-June onward. September is ideal - post-monsoon clarity for both lakes, the Pangong colour at its sharpest, and the chance of spotting black-necked cranes at Tso Moriri before they migrate. July and August work well but the Shyok route can see monsoon gravel. October is possible for the Leh-Pangong section but the Tso Moriri access road may begin closing and camp options thin out at both lakes.
