Ilam sits at a comparable hill altitude to Darjeeling just across the border, comfortable through most of the year, genuinely cold in winter. March through May brings the tea gardens' fresh spring flush, while the monsoon, June through September, keeps the estates at their greenest despite heavier rain. October and November offer the clearest views.
