Overview

The Pangong youโ€™ve seen in photographs โ€” turquoise, shimmering, held in summer light โ€” does not exist between December and February. What replaces it is a frozen pangong lake winter landscape that most travellers will never witness. The water becomes a thick sheet of blue-white ice stretching 134 kilometres toward Tibet. The surrounding mountains turn white. The temperature at 4,350 metres drops to minus 25 degrees at night and the silence in winter carries a different weight from summer โ€” heavier, denser, as if the cold itself has mass. This 5 day trip from Leh is built for the traveller who chose January on purpose.

Bon handles the winter ground logistics, which differ from summer in every detail. The only way into Leh between November and March is by air โ€” both the Manali and Srinagar highways sit buried under snow. The private car operates on cleared roads within Ladakh, the Inner Line Permit for Pangong is arranged in Leh before departure, and accommodation at the lake is a homestay or guesthouse because the summer camps close by October. The road to Pangong via Chang La at approximately 5,360 metres is weather-dependent in winter and may require a flexible schedule. Bon monitors conditions daily and adjusts timing to what the mountain allows.

Itinerary

The frozen pangong lake winter trip begins at Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport โ€” the only way in. Both highways close by late October and the flight from Delhi descends into a snow-covered Indus valley that looks nothing like its brown summer version. Leh at 3,524 metres in January sits between minus 10 and minus 15 degrees during the day and falls further after dark. The hotel has heating, and you'll need it. Acclimatisation in winter follows the same rule as summer โ€” rest, water, no exertion โ€” but the cold adds a layer the body has to process alongside the thin air. Stay indoors after arrival. The slow start begins tomorrow.

Best Time to Visit

Ladakh is most welcoming from May to September. During these peak months, daytime temperatures range comfortably between 15ยฐC and 25ยฐC, though nights remain crisp. These favorable conditions ensure high-altitude passes are snow-free and accessible by road. For those seeking clear, golden landscapes and fewer crowds, September offers the perfect balance of manageable weather and stunning visibility before the harsh sub-zero winter begins in October.
