Overview

The Andaman reef at Havelock has everything an underwater photographer needs β€” the light penetration in the October to May season, the subject variety from nudibranchs at two centimetres to barracuda schools at mid-water, the coral formations for wide angle compositions and the sea turtles at Turtle Bay that hold long enough for a properly framed portrait if the approach is right. The andaman underwater photography package is built around getting the most from that environment β€” a theory workshop covering light behaviour underwater, white balance and strobe positioning, followed by guided photo dives where the focus is the frame rather than the depth. Underwater photography requires everything scuba diving requires plus buoyancy so precise that the coral below never gets disturbed, approach patience that most divers do not initially have and an understanding of how colour shifts with depth that completely changes how the camera is set up compared to surface photography. The workshop addresses all three before the first dive.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Andaman Islands Airport arrival. Day 1 covers Port Blair and the Cellular Jail. Day 2 takes the ferry to Havelock for the theory workshop and equipment briefing in the afternoon. Days 3 and 4 are the guided photo dives β€” shallow natural light reef on Day 3 morning, deeper strobe work on Day 3 afternoon and the dedicated photography dive at the best Havelock site on Day 4 morning. Day 5 returns to Port Blair via the ferry with a Ross Island photography session before the departure. Vehicle transfers, ferry tickets and MAP meals throughout are included. All workshop fees, dive charges and equipment hire are paid separately to the registered dive and photography operator.

Itinerary

The andaman underwater photography package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The first afternoon is the Cellular Jail β€” built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings, the colonial prison where political prisoners from across India were held. The evening light and sound show runs approximately 45 minutes after dark. For the photographer in the group, Port Blair carries its own above-water photography programme β€” the Cellular Jail in the late afternoon light, the harbour at the Aberdeen Jetty, the fish market in the early evening. The camera that goes into the underwater housing tomorrow afternoon starts its Andaman work today. An early night follows β€” Day 2 takes the morning ferry to Havelock and the andaman underwater photography package workshop begins in the afternoon. Overnight in Port Blair.

Best Time to Visit

The Havelock underwater photography window runs from October to May when water visibility at the dive sites is at its best for image quality. The southwest monsoon from June through September reduces visibility significantly and makes the boat crossings to the dive sites unreliable. Within the open season, November through February offers the clearest natural light penetration for the shallow natural light dives on Day 3 morning and the most stable sea conditions for the Day 4 morning photo dive at the named sites. March through May is acceptable but visibility can vary with pre-monsoon current shifts. The water temperature of approximately 27 to 29 degrees Celsius throughout the open season is comfortable for extended dive sessions with camera equipment.
