Overview

The leatherback turtle is the largest reptile on earth — adults reach up to two metres in length and can weigh over 500 kilograms. Kalipur Beach near Diglipur in North Andaman is one of the few confirmed leatherback nesting sites in India. The forest department runs an active nest protection programme here during the nesting season between approximately October and February. Olive ridley turtles nest at Cuthbert Bay near Rangat and Karmatang near Mayabunder across the same approximate season. All three beaches are long, undeveloped stretches where nesting happens at night — the female hauls out of the water after dark, finds a site above the high tide line, excavates a nest cavity using her rear flippers and lays a clutch before returning to the sea. The process takes one to three hours. Witnessing it requires being on the right beach at the right hour and accepting that the turtle’s schedule is not a tourism calendar. This andaman turtle conservation package is built around the honest version of that experience — three nesting beaches, three pre-dawn watches, the forest department programme as context and no guarantee of what any given night will produce.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers the Cellular Jail and the drive to Rangat for the first Cuthbert Bay evening orientation. Days 2 and 3 move progressively north through Mayabunder and Diglipur, each morning opening with a pre-dawn beach watch at the current nesting site. Day 4 gives the Kalipur leatherback beach its own morning before the return drive south to Rangat. Day 5 completes the return to Port Blair. Day 6 is the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all road transfers. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout all six days.

Itinerary

The andaman turtle conservation package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The drive north to Rangat covers approximately 170 kilometres through South and Middle Andaman, taking around 5 to 6 hours including the convoy passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve near Jirkatang where stopping and photography are strictly prohibited under Indian law. Rangat is the overnight base for the first nesting beach. The Cellular Jail programme is covered on the drive out of Port Blair — the colonial prison built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings — and the evening light and sound show timing is assessed against the drive schedule with the Bon team on arrival day. Cuthbert Bay Beach in the evening is the orientation visit — the long undeveloped beach approximately 8 kilometres from Rangat where the forest department runs an olive ridley nest protection programme. The group walks the beach as the light drops and the forest department representative confirms the night's conditions before the pre-dawn return tomorrow. Overnight at Rangat.

Best Time to Visit

This andaman turtle conservation package operates during the nesting season only — approximately October to March. October to February gives the best probability of leatherback activity at Kalipur and olive ridley nesting at Cuthbert Bay and Karmatang. Bookings outside this window cannot be offered as a turtle conservation package.
