The reef at Elephant Beach on Havelock Island during the day is well documented — the coral formations, the reef fish at snorkelling depth, the boat ride from the jetty. At night the same reef operates on an entirely different set of rules. Parrotfish sleep inside mucus cocoons they produce each evening, visible and stationary on the coral surface in a way they never are during the day. Octopus come out of the crevices after dark and move across the reef in the open. Moray eels leave their holes. Cuttlefish hunt in the shallow water. The torch beam in the water picks up eyes and movement that the daytime snorkel session at the same site never produces. Bioluminescent plankton in the Andaman Islands water can turn the disturbance around a swimmer’s hands and fins into brief pulses of cold blue light on moonless nights — this is not guaranteed on every visit, but when it is present it changes the experience of being in that water into something that is very difficult to describe to someone who has not seen it. Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers Port Blair and the Cellular Jail. Day 2 takes the ferry to Havelock with the afternoon at Radhanagar Beach. Day 3 is the centrepiece — Elephant Beach in the morning for the daytime reef session, Radhanagar in the afternoon and the same Elephant Beach after dark for the night snorkelling with a registered operator. Day 4 crosses to Neil Island for the calm beaches and the natural bridge. Day 5 returns to Port Blair for the departure.
