Day 1 • Land at Leh: ladakh adventure trip

Thiksey Monastery in the morning — 12 storeys on a hilltop, 19 kilometres east. The walk through the complex tests the legs at altitude without pushing them. You need to be someone who walks regularly, handles late nights and early mornings, and doesn't panic when the road gets rough.

The Chilling to Nimmu stretch is Grade II-III — moderate rapids suitable for first-time rafters. Professional raft guides handle the technical navigation. Life jackets and helmets are mandatory and provided. The water is cold — snowmelt from the Zanskar glacier — so expect to get wet and feel it. Children below fourteen and non-swimmers should discuss suitability with Bon before booking. The rafting is seasonal, running June through September when water levels are right.

Yes. The rafting on Day 7 is optional. If you'd rather spend the afternoon in Leh after the Chang La return, the schedule adjusts. The package price stays the same. The rafting charges are paid locally and listed under exclusions, so skipping it doesn't change your cost with Bon.

Day 5 — the Shyok valley drive from Nubra to Pangong. Six hours of rough road, dust, no phone signal, and the sustained altitude of the Changthang. The road surface is unpaved in long sections and the car moves slowly through rocky stretches. It's not dangerous — the driver knows every kilometre — but it's physically tiring. The reward is Pangong appearing at the end of it, which recalibrates the memory of the drive almost immediately.

Late June through September. June has the freshest passes and thinnest crowds. July-August are warmest with the best rafting water levels. September gives the sharpest skies and lake colours. The rafting section closes by early October and Khardung La becomes unreliable by late October. May is possible but early-season snow closures can disrupt the pass crossings.
