Overview

Most people who have been to the Andaman Islands have not heard of Interview Island. It sits off the western coast of Middle Andaman, accessible by a boat ride of approximately one to one and a half hours from Mayabunder harbour, and it has no permanent human population. What it does have is a population of feral elephants — descendants of animals brought to the island during the British period for timber extraction work and left there when the operations ended. The island is a designated wildlife sanctuary. The elephants are wild, the forest is dense and a sighting on any given day depends on where the animals have moved. This is not a zoo visit with a guaranteed result at the end of it. It is a boat ride to an uninhabited island where wild elephants live and the experience of being in that place — regardless of whether an elephant appears on the path — is unlike anything else the Andaman Islands offer. Itinerary

The mayabunder andaman package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The drive north to Rangat covers approximately 170 kilometres through South and Middle Andaman, taking around 5 to 6 hours including the convoy passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve near Jirkatang where stopping and photography are strictly prohibited under Indian law. The road north of the reserve opens into Middle Andaman’s forest landscape — settlements thinning, the road quieter, the air different from the south. The Moricedera mangrove creek near Rangat is the afternoon stop — a tidal waterway through dense mangrove forest navigable by small boat, the canopy closing the sky overhead in the narrower sections. It is a good introduction to the Middle Andaman ecosystem before the island’s more dramatic northern geography takes over from Day 2 onward. Overnight at Rangat.

Best Time to Visit

The boat crossing from Mayabunder harbour to Interview Island Wildlife Sanctuary is most reliably safe between October and May when the Andaman Sea is calmer and the sea conditions in the channel between Mayabunder and the island are manageable. The monsoon from June through September brings rough seas that frequently prevent the Interview Island crossing entirely and the sanctuary excursion cannot proceed when conditions are unsafe. The best overall window for this mayabunder andaman package is October through April, with the winter months of November through February offering the clearest weather for both the island crossing and the Karmatang Beach turtle nesting season which runs from October to March. The Karen village visit and the Ross-Smith sandbar excursion at Diglipur are accessible year-round but the boat-dependent elements require favourable sea conditions.
