The Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express began commercial operations in June 2025 — the first time in history that a passenger train connected the Kashmir Valley to the Indian mainland rail network. The 272-kilometre Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, thirty years in construction through some of the most difficult terrain in the Himalayas, produced a railway that crosses the Chenab River on a bridge approximately 359 metres above the water — the highest railway bridge in the world. The journey from Katra to Srinagar takes approximately 3 hours on the Vande Bharat Express and passes through a series of tunnels cut through the Pir Panjal rock including sections where mobile connectivity drops completely before the valley opens on the far side.
