Dong, a small village in Anjaw district near the India, Myanmar and China tri junction, sees one of the earliest sunrises on the Indian mainland every day of the year. Getting to that pre dawn ridge takes two long drives across the Lohit valley from Dibrugarh, but the moment is what it is, daylight breaks here before most of the country has stirred. Walong, seven kilometres from Dong, is your base for two full nights so weather has a fair chance to cooperate. The 1962 war’s eastern front ran through these slopes, and the war memorial nearby is worth the visit on its own terms. Stays are simple guesthouse rooms, fitting the place, and the Inner Line Permit, fuel, tolls and MAP meals are handled, so all you bring is a warm jacket and an early alarm.

Itinerary

You land at Dibrugarh, cross the Brahmaputra by road, and follow the highway east to Tezu in Lohit district, roughly five hours including the Inner Line Permit check on the way. Tezu sits on the warm river plain at low elevation, a calm first night before the long climb up the Lohit valley tomorrow. Best Time to Visit

The Siang and Mechuka circuit is most reliable from October to April, the drier months when the interior roads and river crossings are most stable. Monsoon brings landslides and washouts on the rough Aalo to Mechuka stretch, so it is generally avoided. Dibrugarh and Pasighat are warm year round, while Mechuka at 6,000 feet is cool even in summer.
