Overview

The Andaman Islands hold approximately 270 recorded bird species of which around 13 are endemic to the archipelago β€” found on these islands and nowhere else on earth. The Andaman woodpecker, the Andaman serpent eagle, the Andaman shama, the Andaman drongo, the Andaman treepie and the Andaman scops owl are not found in mainland India, not found in Southeast Asia and not found anywhere else in the world. They exist here, in the rainforest of Saddle Peak National Park, in the mangrove edge at Chiriya Tapu, in the forest corridors north of Mayabunder, in the Mount Harriet trail above Port Blair. The birding community has been quietly building a case for the Andaman Islands as one of the finest endemic birding destinations in Asia for several years and that case is now appearing on birding YouTube channels and wildlife Instagram accounts with increasing frequency. This andaman birding package builds the circuit those endemics require β€” six days across the south and north forest zones, early morning starts, pre-dawn Saddle Peak and the mangrove waterway at Chiriya Tapu before the rest of the island wakes up.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers the Cellular Jail and the evening birding walk at Mount Harriet National Park near Port Blair. Day 2 is the south Andaman birding day β€” Chiriya Tapu mangrove edge in the morning and Wandoor marine national park shoreline in the afternoon. Day 3 drives north to Mayabunder for the afternoon forest birding and Karmatang Beach shorebird walk. Day 4 moves to Diglipur with an afternoon entry into Saddle Peak National Park. Day 5 opens before dawn at Saddle Peak for the best birding window, then drives south to Rangat for the overnight. Day 6 returns to Port Blair for the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all road transfers throughout. Forest department permits for Mount Harriet and Saddle Peak are included. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout all six days.

Itinerary

The andaman birding package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The afternoon covers the Cellular Jail β€” the colonial prison built between 1896 and 1906 across seven radiating wings where political prisoners from across India were held. The evening light and sound show runs approximately 45 minutes in the jail courtyard after dark. The Day 1 birding begins at Mount Harriet National Park β€” the highest point on South Andaman at approximately 365 metres, accessible by ferry to Bamboo Flat and a short drive to the park entry, or by direct road route from Port Blair. The forest at Mount Harriet in the late afternoon carries the Andaman treepie, the Andaman bulbul and the Andaman coucal in habitat that gives a first read of what the archipelago’s endemic forest species look and sound like before the more demanding north forest days ahead. Overnight in Port Blair.

Best Time to Visit

The Andaman forest bird activity is highest in the cooler months between October and April when the forest is at its most acoustically active in the pre-dawn and early morning hours. The endemic species of Saddle Peak National Park are most vocal in the breeding season window of February through April when territorial calls carry furthest through the rainforest canopy. The monsoon from June through September brings heavy forest rain that suppresses bird activity and makes the early morning trail approaches at Chiriya Tapu and Saddle Peak difficult and sometimes impassable. The North Andaman convoy roads are most reliable between October and May. The peak demand window for this andaman birding package falls in December through March when all five birding habitats in the circuit are at their most productive.
