Overview

Long Island sits in the Ritchie’s Archipelago group in Middle Andaman, a 30 to 45 minute government ferry ride from Rangat across a channel that is calm enough on most days to cross without thinking about it. The island has no motor vehicles. The only beach worth going to β€” Lalaji Bay on the eastern side β€” is accessible only by a jungle trek of approximately 45 minutes to an hour from the jetty along a forest path that has no road alternative and never will. The beach at the end of it is completely undeveloped β€” no sunbeds, no operator selling coconut water, no other group spreading out to your left or right in peak season. The forest that surrounds it on three sides runs down to the sand and the fourth side is open ocean. There are paddy fields a short walk from the jetty, a small market and a community that farms and fishes and has limited interest in the tourism economy. This long island andaman package is built for the traveller who finds all of that appealing rather than inconvenient.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers the drive north to Rangat with the Moricedera mangrove creek in the late afternoon. Day 2 takes the ferry to Long Island and the first trek to Lalaji Bay. Day 3 is a full day on the island. Day 4 returns by ferry to Rangat and drives south to Port Blair with a stop at Baratang. Day 5 is the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all road transfers at Port Blair and Rangat. Government ferry tickets for the Rangat to Long Island crossing in both directions are included. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis at all hotels throughout all five days.

Itinerary

The long island andaman package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The drive north to Rangat covers approximately 170 kilometres through South and Middle Andaman taking around 5 to 6 hours including the convoy passage through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve near Jirkatang where stopping and photography are strictly prohibited under Indian law. Rangat is the main town of Middle Andaman β€” a functional market town with no particular tourist infrastructure and a working pace that has nothing to do with the resort economy of the south. The late afternoon stop at the Moricedera mangrove creek near Rangat is a tidal creek navigable by small boat through mangrove forest so dense that the canopy closes the sky overhead in sections. The quiet of a forest waterway with no traffic is a specific kind of quiet. Overnight at Rangat.

Best Time to Visit

Middle Andaman and the Rangat to Long Island ferry channel are best visited between October and May when sea conditions are calm and the Baratang limestone cave crossing is accessible without weather-related cancellation. The monsoon from June through September brings rough seas that can disrupt the Rangat to Long Island ferry, heavy rainfall that makes the Lalaji Bay jungle trek slippery, and convoy road conditions between Port Blair and Rangat that are sometimes affected by landslides. The peak demand period for this long island andaman package falls between November and March when the island’s paddyfield and forest landscape is at its most lush following the monsoon. The Baratang limestone cave motorboat crossing is subject to water levels in the mangrove creek and is most reliably available outside the peak monsoon months.
