Overview

Most visitors to the Andaman Islands spend half a day at the Cellular Jail and call the history done. The colonial and penal history of these islands is considerably deeper than that. Viper Island in Port Blair harbour was the original detention site for prisoners transported to the Andamans β€” the gallows there predate the Cellular Jail by decades and the island served as the first chapter of the Andaman penal settlement from approximately the 1850s. The Cellular Jail, built between 1896 and 1906, was the institutional continuation of what Viper Island began β€” the solitary confinement system, the oil press labour, the 698 cells designed to prevent prisoners from knowing who else was imprisoned alongside them. Ross Island held the British administrative apparatus that managed both β€” the chief commissioner’s residence, the church, the club, all of it running on the same island as the jail it governed. The Anthropological Museum carries the history that predates the colonial period β€” the indigenous communities of the Andamans whose presence here is thousands of years older than the penal colony. This andaman heritage package covers all of it across five days with a Havelock day trip on Day 4 because the reef and the beach are part of what the Andaman Islands are and the heritage alone is not the whole story.

Bon Voyagers manages the complete ground programme from Port Blair Airport arrival. Day 1 covers the Anthropological Museum and the Cellular Jail. Day 2 covers Viper Island, Ross Island and the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum. Day 3 is the Port Blair heritage deep day β€” Aberdeen Bazaar, the Chatham Saw Mill on Chatham Island and the Port Blair administrative heritage walk. Day 4 is the Havelock day trip β€” the ferry to Radhanagar Beach and the return by evening. Day 5 is North Bay and the departure. Private AC Ertiga or Xylo class vehicle covers all Port Blair road transfers. Boat tickets for Viper Island, Ross Island and North Bay, ferry tickets for Havelock and all entry charges are included. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout all five days.

Itinerary

The andaman heritage package begins at Port Blair Airport where the Bon Voyagers representative meets the group on arrival. The Anthropological Museum is the first stop β€” and deliberately so. The indigenous communities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands β€” the Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese and Nicobarese peoples β€” have inhabited these islands for thousands of years. The museum covers their histories, languages, material culture and the severe population decline that the colonial and post-colonial period produced. Starting the heritage circuit with the Anthropological Museum means the Cellular Jail visit that follows reads differently β€” the colonial penal settlement is not the beginning of the Andaman story, it is a chapter in a much longer one. The Cellular Jail in the late afternoon β€” the seven radiating wings built between 1896 and 1906, the individual cells, the oil press β€” followed by the evening light and sound show of approximately 45 minutes in the courtyard. Overnight in Port Blair.

Best Time to Visit

October through April is the best window for this andaman heritage package β€” Port Blair is accessible year-round but the Havelock day trip ferry on Day 4 is most reliable in calm sea conditions. December and January are peak months. The monsoon from May through September can affect ferry services to Havelock and the Viper Island and Ross Island boat crossings.
