Overview

The Verinag Spring rises at the base of the Pir Panjal range in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir — a natural spring whose water feeds the stream that becomes the Jhelum River. Emperor Jahangir built a garden around it in 1620 and the enclosure has stood since — an octagonal stone tank around the spring mouth, stone parapet walls, water channels feeding the formal garden beyond the chamber and a grove of old chinar trees shading the outer garden. The spring water is clear enough at the surface to see the floor of the tank at several metres depth and the flow is constant through the seasons. This verinag spring kashmir package pairs the spring with the two other South Kashmir heritage anchors that belong in the same day — Martand Sun Temple on the Mattan plateau and Achabal Garden to the north — across three days that move cleanly from Jammu through the South Kashmir heritage belt and back.

Day 1 drives north from Jammu through the Banihal Tunnel into South Kashmir and directly to Verinag for the overnight. Day 2 covers the Verinag spring garden in the morning before the drive to Martand Sun Temple on the Mattan plateau and then to Achabal Garden in the afternoon. Day 3 returns from the Srinagar overnight to Jammu via the Banihal Tunnel. No Protected Area Permit is required for any destination on this route. Daily breakfast and dinner on MAP basis throughout.

Itinerary

The verinag spring kashmir package begins at Jammu Railway Station or Airport where the Bon Voyagers vehicle is waiting. The drive north from Jammu to Verinag covers approximately 215 kilometres routing through Udhampur, the Banihal Tunnel and Qazigund before turning east toward the Pir Panjal base, taking around 4 to 4.5 hours. The tunnel exit at Qazigund puts the vehicle in the southern end of the Kashmir Valley and Verinag sits approximately 35 kilometres further east from Qazigund along a road that follows the base of the Pir Panjal. Verinag is a small town around the spring garden — the garden enclosure sits at the eastern edge of the town at the point where the hillside meets the flat valley floor and the spring emerges from the rock. The Day 1 arrival afternoon is for the first visit to the spring garden before the light fades — the water in the octagonal tank in the late afternoon carries a different quality from the midday visit that the Day 2 morning will deliver.
